Week 35

We had a wonderful, creative, adventurous and exciting week!

In Science, we started our Plants unit. We made a concept map based on the Bill Nye video on plants. We learned that chlorophyll is very important in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is a pigment that gives the plant's leaves their green colour and absorbs (soaks up/traps) sunlight. We reviewed the process of photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, plants need sunlight, water, nutrients and carbon dioxide (CO2) to make sugar (carbohydrates) and oxygen.
In Math, we had our practice check-in and our actual check-in quiz for our multiplication unit. The strategies we could use are the Standard algorithm, Partial products, Area model and Distributive property. We will be starting our division unit next week.

In Social Studies, we finished writing our persuasive letter. We needed work on giving more information and adding details so the reader can visual what we are planning for our homesteads.

We continued reading Chapter 10 in Ticket to Curlew. Gregor a boy that didn't speak English, surprisingly said his name for the first time. The Martingales lost their oxen that they need for farming in order to make money and buy food.

We had our field trip to OH Ranch. We learned that the NWMP had a routine every morning which involved getting water for shaving, making their bed and mopping the floors. The NWMP's job was to talk to the ranchers to make sure their ranches were safe and that they were being stewards of the land. They also wrote reports about losses, number of livestock (farm animals), document languages spoken, countries people came from and if they had any diseases.

Passion Projects!

Aaryan's Passion Project was about Tornadoes. He talked about the different types of tornadoes: fire tornado (fire swirl), supercell, non-supercell and multiple vortex tornado.

In Ethan's Passion Project we learned about the Humboldt Broncos and how they got into an accident on Highway SK 335. There were 13 survivors and 16 fatalities of the accident.

Week 34

We had fantastic, amazing and eventful week!

In Science we will be starting our new Plant Unit.

In Social Studies, we started our Persuasive letters. Our letters need to include an introduction, body and conclusion. In our introduction we had to a greeting, what brought us to Alberta and explain why we moved to Alberta, such as it's rich soil and free homes. In the body of the letter we included about about our life in Alberta, such as where we would build our homestead, what materials we might use, what we would build inside our homestead, what items we would have on our homestead and the types of chores we might expect to do on our homestead. In our conclusion, we need to talk about how and why life will be better in Alberta.

In Math, we created multiplication word problems and solved them using the CUBES strategy and then the different multiplication strategies: standard algorithm, distributive property, area model and partial products.

Passion Projects!

Reta's Passion Project was about pennies. We learned that pennies are made from zinc and plated with copper. They don't make pennies anymore because it costs way too much money to produce (1.5 cents to produce 1 penny).

In Damian's Passion Project we learned about the Flames. The Calgary Flames of have a "farm team", the Stockton Heat. The Flames have three jerseys, the home, away and alternate. Calgary has other hockey teams which include the Calgary Hitmen, the Calgary Inferno.

Gurpreet's Passion Project was about the Taj Mahal. The legend has it, there was a King who had 14 children. Shah Jahan had 3 wives in total. He build the Taj Mahal for his 2nd wife after she died. She died while giving birth to their 14th child. Currently the king and queen are buried under the Taj Mahal. The King build was planning to build another Taj Mahal made of black marble for himself, but unfortunately he died. He planned to be buried in the black marbled Taj Mahal, but instead his son buried beside in 2nd wife in the Taj Mahal which broke the symmetry.
