Week 38

We had a fantastic, wonderful and an amazing week!

This week we had our Heritage Park Field Trip. We learned about different shops that were open in the early 1900s (such as the blacksmith shop, the candy and ice cream shop, the bakery). We also visited different homes, including the Livingston house, Colonel Macleod's Sandstone house and the Prince's house. There were two schools to visit at the park. There was a livery stable with horses and their names were Mac, Cap (Cheese), Tom and King.

We had our Sports Day! In our classroom we had a mini-golf course which had five different "holes", including one were students could earn points. We visited other stations in different classrooms that had various activities. These activities included: a three-legged race, a feather race, i-pads, cup stacking, cats cradle, hula hoop, building, limbo, silent ball, geoboards, colouring, baseball, a parachute, mission impossible, centers, obstacle courses and a bean bag toss. At the end of Sports Day we watched a movie and got freezies.

Passion Projects!

Turner's Passion Project was about the Toronto Raptors. We learned that they are the only Canadian basketball team in the NBA. We looked at the different types of jerseys. They have a home jersey, away jersey and alt jerseys. Some of the key players are: Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Danny Green, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol and Norman Powell. Last season Norman Powell had the worst season of his career because he only averaged 4 points per game.

In Sophie's Passion Project she taught us about crocheting. She showed us the different objects that you could make with crochet, such as a teddy bear, gloves and a poncho. We watched a video of someone attempting to beat the world record of 28 stitches in 1 minute. She only got 27 stitches in 1 minute. Sophie also taught us the difference between crocheting and knitting. The main difference is that in crocheting you use a hook and in knitting you use needles. Sophie also talked about three different stitches: single crotchet, double crotchet and a slip stitch.

Week 37

We had an amazing, awesome and unpredictable week!

In Science, we learned about the parts and functions of a plant which consists of the roots, stem, leaves, bud, flowers/fruit. We drew an interactive diagram that included information and drawings of the different plant parts.

In Math, we learned the long division strategy. First you need to create an equation (with the dividend under and to the right side of the equation sign and with the divisor on the left side of the equation sign). When we are using the long division strategy, we need to divide digit-by-digit starting with the highest place value. When you solve a long division problem, you might get a zero or you might get a remainder.

How do video:

We read chapter 15 and 16 in Ticket to Curlew. In chapter 15 there was a 5 day snow storm. Sam was concerned that Prince would be really cold and in danger outside. We also read that Gregor started to learn how to speak English with the help of Sam and the other Ferrier children. The book that Ms. Barnett lent Sam was not helpful because it didn't have animals and objects that existed in Curlew, so Sam's mom gave him an Eaton's catalogue with items such as boots, hats, and shoes. All the Ferrier children helped Gregor learn English using pictures, actions and objects. After 1 hour Gregor learned how to say "Give me my hats and shoes" and "Where are my hats and shoes?". At the end of Chapter 16 Sam and his father noticed that a group of horses were following Prince. After witnessing this, they both agreed to change Prince's name to King because he was the 'king of the horses'.

Passion Projects!

In Jade's Passion Project, we learned about comics. One of the best comic writers was Stan Lee. He created comic books like Avengers, Spiderman and Captain America. Jade shared many fun facts such as: the old Superman comics are the most expensive comics and at first they wanted the Hulk to be grey, but when they printed off the comics he turned out to be green and they did not have time to print it again.

In Alex's Passion Project, we learned about the World of Dance. There are three judges who rate the different performers and determine if they qualify to dance in the next round. The lowest score given to a team was a score of 80 points.

In Madison's Passion Project, we learned about the 8 planets. They are Mars, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Mercury, Neptune and Venus. All the of the planets (except Earth) are named after Greek gods. We also learned that Uranus and Neptune spin differently because they move slowly.

In Science, we add our observations to the germination chart. On June 4th, Seed A had 10 and Seed B had 4 germinated seeds. On June 6th, Seed A had 14 and Seed B had 7 germinated seeds. Most of use think that Seed B is from space or was exposed to space like conditions, and that Seed A is from Earth. They are growing rapidly and we will continuing to make our observations.

We read Chapter 12 in Ticket to Curlew. In this chapter Sam's family started reading the weekly newspapers to the Corbetts. One Saturday morning was suppose to read the newspaper, but he did not arrive back from town early enough so Sam read in his place. He was a bit scared at first, but he ended being a strong and confident reader.

We had hoop dancing with Jessica. We started dancing with 1 hoop, then 2 hoops and made way to 5 hoops. Jessica talked about how dancers could go up to 50 hoops at most. Using hoops we created different animals, creatures and symbols, such as butterflies, eagles, horses, beavers, a bow and arrow. When we dancing we are making a story with our actions.

We had a presentation about chickens! We learned that about were they go when they are babies. Male chickens get processed to become food, female chickens either lay eggs and/or get processed as well. Brown chickens are more sociable and white chickens tend to be less sociable. The colour of their eggs determines the colour of their eggs - brown chickens lays brown eggs and white chickens lay brown or white eggs.  There is one Rooster per hen house, and their job is to calm all chickens.

Passion Projects!

In Japneet's Passion Project it was about water. Brazil has the most water available for use.

Kingston's Passion Project was about the NHL which stands for the National Hockey League. Every year there is an All Star weekend. In 2019, the winner of the fastest skater was won by Connor McDavid, the hardest shot went to by John Carlson, and Johnny Gaudreau won puck control

For Turner's Passion Project we learned about the Stanley Cup and the previous teams that have won the Stanley Cup. In 2018 the Washington Capitals won and the Pittsburgh Penguins have won the cup in two consecutive years (2016 and 2017). The very first team that won the Stanley Cup in 1918 were the Toronto Arenas.

Our spelling pattern next week:

Week 35

We had a wonderful, creative, adventurous and exciting week!

In Science, we started our Plants unit. We made a concept map based on the Bill Nye video on plants. We learned that chlorophyll is very important in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is a pigment that gives the plant's leaves their green colour and absorbs (soaks up/traps) sunlight. We reviewed the process of photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, plants need sunlight, water, nutrients and carbon dioxide (CO2) to make sugar (carbohydrates) and oxygen.
In Math, we had our practice check-in and our actual check-in quiz for our multiplication unit. The strategies we could use are the Standard algorithm, Partial products, Area model and Distributive property. We will be starting our division unit next week.

In Social Studies, we finished writing our persuasive letter. We needed work on giving more information and adding details so the reader can visual what we are planning for our homesteads.

We continued reading Chapter 10 in Ticket to Curlew. Gregor a boy that didn't speak English, surprisingly said his name for the first time. The Martingales lost their oxen that they need for farming in order to make money and buy food.

We had our field trip to OH Ranch. We learned that the NWMP had a routine every morning which involved getting water for shaving, making their bed and mopping the floors. The NWMP's job was to talk to the ranchers to make sure their ranches were safe and that they were being stewards of the land. They also wrote reports about losses, number of livestock (farm animals), document languages spoken, countries people came from and if they had any diseases.

Passion Projects!

Aaryan's Passion Project was about Tornadoes. He talked about the different types of tornadoes: fire tornado (fire swirl), supercell, non-supercell and multiple vortex tornado.

In Ethan's Passion Project we learned about the Humboldt Broncos and how they got into an accident on Highway SK 335. There were 13 survivors and 16 fatalities of the accident.
